Figure Skating 2009 at Helsinki

Finland’s Laura Lepistö has won the European Championship with a total score of 167.32 points. She is the first ever Finnish skater to win the ladies’ title.

Italy’s Carolina Kostner placed second, receiving a total score of 165.42 points. Finland’s Susanna Pöykiö came third with an overall score of 156.31. All medallists beat their earlier season’s best scores for the free programme.

Lepistö, who led the race for gold after the short, handled the intense pressure of skating in front of a roaring home audience extremely well. The 20-year-old Finn skated a calm and well-rounded free program to Don Juan de Marco. She also had a few problems, and ended up simplifying her triple-triple combination and singling her triple Lutz. She was still happy with her skate and couldn’t believe that she’d won.

- This is an incredible feeling. I can’t even start to tell what’s going through my mind now, Lepistö said.

The Finnish team had set a goal of two medals, but Lepistö still said that she could never have expected for one of them to be a golden one, or her.

The 10,000 strong crowd’s reaction to Lepistö’s final spin was electric. The skater said she felt the great energy of the crowd.

- I have never experienced a feeling like that. The crowd exploded, and I had the same feeling, she said.

Italy’s Kostner, who started the competition as the number-one favourite, skated a clean and stylish free to Anton Dvorak. Her excellent speed and jumps were enough to win the free skating event, but she was only able to pull up to second place overall. Kostner doubled her triple flip and claimed to have made other errors as well.

- I’m very pleased anyway. The audience was awesome and cheered me as well, Kostner said.

Bronze medallist, Finland’s Susanna Pöykiö was slightly disappointed with her skating, but satisfied with her medal. She doubled a combination jump and a flip and told she had felt nervous on the ice, skating right after Lepistö.

- I’m extremely glad to be back at this level, and still have a chance to show these girls what I’ve got at the next competition, Pöykiö laughed.

All three agreed that the level of European ladies’ skating is currently very high.

- The American and Japanese are hard to beat, but we can fight them at Worlds, Kostner summed up the trio’s feelings.

Finland’s Kiira Korpi finished in fifth place. She had a surprise fall in the beginning of her free program and had to restart her music, costing her a three-point deduction. She was still happy to have been able to skate for her home audience.

- I guess this is figure skating drama at its best, or in my case at its worst. My blades must have crashed or something. At the end I felt good about being able to pull off the whole program, Korpi said.

All the medallists of the Helsinki European Championships will perform in the Gala Exhibiton on Sunday at 3.30 p.m.

FA News

According Soccernet Brendan Rodgers has been given an early opportunity to show his former employers what they are missing after Watford were drawn at home to Chelsea in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Rodgers spent four years as youth and reserve coach at Stamford Bridge before leaving to take the managerial reins at Vicarage Road in November.
The 38-year-old will not be the only familiar face for the visitors with Frank Lampard Sr, father of Chelsea's England midfielder, currently employed as Rodgers' football consultant.
Captain Jay DeMerit, who netted his first FA Cup goal in yesterday's 4-3 fourth-round win over Crystal Palace, believes the occasion will be one for the Hornets to relish.

He told Sky Sports: "It's a tough game of course but this is what we play for. Ever since I've been here we've never been short of cup runs and it's always good to get in these situations.''

The Marion Jones disgrace

U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas sent a message to professional athletes when he imposed the maximum sentence on Olympic champion Marion Jones last Friday. Jones was sentenced to the maximum six months in prison for lying about using steroids and for her role in a check-fraud scheme. She pleaded for lenience out of concern for her two young children, including an infant she's still nursing. "Athletes serve as role models," said the judge. "In our society athletes have an elevated status, they entertain and they inspire us."

In addition Jones was given two years' probation and was sentenced to 800 hours of community service. Despite previous denials that she had ever used performance-enhancing drugs, last October Jones finally admitted she had used a steroid called "the clear" from September 2000 to July 2001. Jones won three gold and two bronze medals at the 2000 Sydney Olympics: golds in the 100- and 200-meter runs, and in the 1600-meter relay, and bronzes in the long jump and 400-meter relay. She returned those medals before the International Olympic Committee asked her to do so.

After pleading guilty last year, Jones broke down, saying, "It's with a great amount of shame that I stand before you and tell you that I have betrayed your trust. I have been dishonest and you have every right to be angry with me. I have let my family down, I have let my country down, and I have let myself down."

Jones was devastated by the sentence. "As everyone can imagine, I'm very disappointed today. But as I stood in front of all of you for years in victory, I stand in front of you today. I stand for what is right. I respect the judge's order, and I truly hope that people will learn from my mistakes."

In a free country it should be up to each individual to decide what to put into his or her own body, but when it comes to athletics, ingesting steroids gives an unfair edge and is simply cheating.

Rafael Nadal is Winner.

Rafael Nadal has destroyed Federer to win French Open. Nadal defeated Roger Federer in the final game for the third year running on Sunday and joined Swedish legend Bjorn Borg as the only man to win four straight titles at Roland Garros.

"I played a perfect match," said Nadal, who was presented with the trophy by Borg.

"I'm sorry for that final but you played well," he told Federer. "I want to thank Roger for his attitude on the court."

"I would have hoped to do better than four games but Rafael is very, very strong," Federer told the crowd.

"He dominated this tournament like maybe no one before except Borg, so congratulations Rafa.

"It was still a good week. Losing in a final is never easy but I will try again next year."

Nadal broke the world No 1 three times as he raced through the first set in 32 minutes.

The Euro 2008 soccer competition

The Euro 2008 soccer competition kicks off this Saturday with Switzerland playing the Czech Republic. One familiar face to anyone who watched the Champions League final on TV will be Petr Cech, the Chelsea goalkeeper.

Germany are the tournament favourites, and they almost have home advantage with their games being played in neighbouring Austria. Italy, widely regarded as second favourites, have just suffered a huge blow with their captain Fabio Cannavaro being ruled out injured after a training ground clash with a team mate only 6 hours after arriving in Switzerland. He will sit out the full tournament.

Portugal are joint third favourites, largely due to Ronaldo's impressive season with Manchester United. He scored 42 goals, including the vital 1st half goal in the Champions League final. He also won "player of the year" in the English Premier League.

Russian Wins 2008 World Hockey Championship.

Russia beats Canada, wins 2008 World Hockey Championship in overtime in the final of the 2008 IIHF World Championship
in Canada to become world champions for the first time in 15 years.

Trailing the Canadians 2-4 in the third period on Sunday, two quick goals from Alexei Tereshchenko and Ilya Kovalchuk brought the Russians level.

And with almost three minutes into overtime and with Canadian
